"Altar of Flies is finally making a new album for iDEAL, the first since "Permanent Cavity" in 2010! AoF is without any doubt one of Sweden’s most prolific and interesting creators of experimental music. His industrial, Mjölby-style musique concrète is deeply personal and his evern though the music is often sparse and minimal - it always contains restrained energy explosions and psychic tensions.
The new self-titled LP on iDEAL is his fifth proper LP. Available soon on iDEAL Recordings.
@sinkorswimmattias / Altar of Flies dad Åke took the amazing front photo of this great LP. Out soon on #idealrecordings !
Before the availability of the tape recorder and during the 1950s, when vinyl was scarce, people in the Soviet Union began making records of banned Western music on discarded x-rays. With the help of a special device, banned bootlegged jazz and rock ‘n’ roll records were “pressed” on thick radiographs salvaged from hospital waste bins and then cut into discs of 23-25 centimeters in diameter. “They would cut the X-ray into a crude circle with manicure scissors and use a cigarette to burn a hole,” says author Anya von Bremzen. “You’d have Elvis on the lungs, Duke Ellington on Aunt Masha’s brain scan — forbidden Western music captured on the interiors of Soviet citizens.”
This amazing #johnduncan LP from 1983 will be reissued on #idealrecordings soonish. (på/i iDEAL Headquarters)
Jim and I worked fast and furiously in Christoph Heemann’s studio to record this, working in shifts, day and night, three days later had it all but finished — then Jim said ‘Let me do just a couple of tweaks, here and there’ and I agreed. Twenty years later, we got together again to add those tweaks. I must say, I think it was worth the wait.
Jim, Joe and Oren invited me to perform with them on my last night in Tokyo — a serious honor — until we were to start I had no idea what to do. Then it came: turn a message I’d been repeating to myself, a reminder, into a sort of chant. That turned into a desperate mantra, then a scream, that left me feeling possessed, draining my voice down to a whisper. Leaving the audience stunned.
